Phoenix - 1901
Brandon introduced me to them almost six years ago, when I first came to LA. Summer 2006, I wasn’t even 18 yet. I don’t own a lot of albums, but I do own almost all of theirs. We listened to United straight through while they took me to 3rd Street Promenade, Chinatown, and Venice Beach for the first time. It wasn’t even where we went that mattered, but the feeling of freedom - driving around with a group of friends that I’d only known for a month but felt like forever. That was probably the deciding factor when I knew I wanted to move to Southern California for college. Phoenix will always remind me of that life changing decision.
